What do I do if I am concerned about the level of English, or the reading and writing or maths needed for the course?

Course participants in the Truck Driving training and licence MUST have completed the RMS

knowledge test prior to coming to the training and assessment. This assumes a reasonable level of English has been achieved.

Course participants in the Forklift course do not have to complete any knowledge test prior to the course. But some written tasks and reading and completing a logbook is required.

If English is a second language or there is low literacy or numeracy that you tell us about our approach is as follows:

  • You can take home material for study
  • Extra time can be given in the training to complete the quizzes or written activities
  • Some (but not much) extra time is allowed in the assessments
  • Oral questions that can substitute for some written work
  • Oral questions are used extensively in the assessments with answers or observations recorded by the Assessor.

Mandated assessments – We are using mandated assessments and the candidate must meet the standard that is set. If they do not meet the standard because of problems with English, or reading or numeracy and understanding calculations, then they may not be able to complete the course successfully and gain a licence.
